Made it through another day here! Today we need more touristy things. We got bus tickets for a bus trip called the Hop on Hop Off..It was a double decker bus that took us around Dublin to see the sights. We got to see the old city walls which were the city limits in the 1500's or so. Then we saw a few churches and cathedrals like St. Augustine's and Church of Christ. We saw where Jonathan Swift, who wrote Gulliver's Travels, lived. Our first major stop was at the Guinness Storehouse.
The storehouse was a seven story museum which used to be where the fermentation took place. It talked about all of the ingredients, advertising throughout it's history, the production process, and lots of other information. The seventh floor was called the Gravity Bar. It had 360 views and you got a free pint up there. The views were amazing. You could see Croke Park, Phoenix Park, some more churches, some canals, and basically the whole city. We also had lunch there which was delicious.
Our next stop was at the Kilmainham prison. It closed in the 1920's but was known for holding/executing political prisoners during the revolutions. It was interesting getting to see all of the floors and we could see which specific cells held which famous people. We walked around where people faced firing squads and learned about who exactly was there. During most of the 200 years this prison was opened it held men, women, and children. The youngest prisoner was 5 years old! Hopefully, that will be the last time I go into a prison :)
Next, we went to a local bar and listened to some music..it was mostly just a bunch of cover songs including journey, U2, and sweet home alabama..we somehow found a bar upstairs that was playing more traditional irish music..little did we know it was part of a pub crawl..we walked in and hung out and were going to follow the band to the next pub they were going to because they told us..then they told us to make sure we still had our tickets and that was our cue to not follow them anymore. All the girls got a free gift bag out of it though!
I think tonight we are just sticking around the dorms. We are going on a 2 hour hike tomorrow in Glendalough. It should be a pretty scenic tour! I will be sure to tell you all about it then!
